I think a sufficiently advanced civilisation that’s achieved interstellar travel would have the necessary technology to explore humanity without needing to reveal themselves!
As to whether psychologically aliens would hold back, it’s extremely hard to say. There are plenty of examples of humans holding back regarding isolated tribes and disinfection to prevent biocontamination of other planets, so I think it’s pretty plausible that other civilisations would choose not to engage until a certain time.

Yeahh agreed lowkey I’m pretty sure we’ll get confirmation of life outside our planet within 5 years but wonder if intelligent life will be discovered
